Writing a Newstory
Writing a news story is a craft that is often overlooked. The story is the backbone for the whole news piece. I started by watching the example news stories given in Google Classroom. I used those to see how news stories are put together to give the most information with the shortest about of time without making it feel rushed. I used the inverted pyramid to make it feel like the Interviewee was leading the story and not like the answers were forced by me, the interviewer. I also learned to use quotes sparingly and only where they will have the best affect.
One thing I liked about this project is that it's our first project where we have had full creative control. We got too choose our topic, and show off everything we have learned since freshman year.
Something I also liked is how much like an actual news show the process of creating the show is. Just like an actual show there is a deadline that needs to be met and if it isn't then our story is just cut. It adds a whole new level to creating the story because it's now not just your grade that is going to be effected it's also how ONW Now is presented to 2000+ students.
One thing I personally would like to improve on is making sure the Interviewee is the one leading the interview and having their answers to the questions lead the video. To do that I also need to improve my voice overs. I need to work on different transitions between questions and not just say, "we asked so and so this and they said, ..."". Something I would do the same is the keep the variety of shots we had to keep this video fresh.
I learned a lot from this time creating a story for ONW Now and there is many things I am going to apply for next time. As mentioned before there was a deadline for this project that had to met, no late points or anything, and your story was cut if not done by the timeline. Thankfully my group was able to finish in time, even if we exported our video at the last second, but are video definitely could have used more time put into it. Our time problem started when all of our ideas were already taken by other groups until we finally decided on the assembly. We had to wait a few days to start so that we could have footage and discuss what the assembly was about but, on the day of the assembly we got the news that it was cancelled and we were sent back to square one. By the time we choose our topic we had very minimal time to edit. Even with the set backs, as mentioned before, my group was able to finish but our video could have used more time. My biggest takeaway from this whole process is just to make sure we have a unique, so that it's not taken already, and strong, so we can get a story out of it, idea for our video.
